Chapter Thirteen

Logan hated everything about Halloween. He disliked pumpkins on a fundamental level. He couldn’t understand why anyone would wear the color orange, let alone decorate with it. And all those scary witches, ghosts, and werewolves? No.

Layla had decided to dress up as Minnie Mouse, and she’d very politely—and with a gallon of teasing twinkles in her eyes—asked him to “pretty please wear a pair of Mickey Mouse ears.”

Which meant he could not wear his cowboy hat. She’d given the hideous ears to him on Monday when he’d gone to the clinic to get the dogs. And he’d told her he’d go with her to the church’s Halloween chili cook-off. It was in two hours, and he couldn’t back out now.

He worked through sunset, pushing his muscles to their breaking point, so he could focus on the pain instead of on how ridiculous he would look in pair of Disney ears. He couldn’t remember the last time he hadn’t worn his hat. He wore it everywhere, all the time. It was the first thing he put on in the morning and the last thing he took off at night.

He wondered if he could position the ears over his hat in any way. Frustrated he was still thinking about it, he dug in his shovel and scooped out another load of straw and manure. Dig and lift. He moved horses from one stall to another. Fed them. Swept the barn. He worked until he was going to be late, and for maybe the first time, he didn’t care.

“You’re not goin’ to the church party?” Darren leaned in the doorway of the barn, his arms folded, showered and cologned up, and wearing all his best cowboy clothes. A flash of irritation mixed with jealousy with a force so strong, Logan scowled.

“I’m going.”

“You’re gonna be late.”

I don’t care, Logan thought, but instead he leaned his shovel against the wall and stormed past his brother, who chuckled like he knew exactly why Logan was so upset.

Twenty minutes later, Logan tossed the Mickey Mouse ears on the bench seat of the truck, glad Darren had gotten a ride into town with Tucker. Logan would wear the stupid ears for thirty seconds to appease Layla. But no way he was eating dinner and playing games with those silly ears on.

He called Layla when he hit the highway, and she answered with, “Hey, where are you?”

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m running late, and I just left.”

“It’s okay. They haven’t started yet.”

Logan felt like he’d swallowed a brick, and he hadn’t even gotten to the party yet. “You know, I’ve secretly been hoping it would be over by the time I got there.”

“You’re not joking.”

“Not even a little bit.”

Silence poured through the line, and Logan regretted his statement. “Layla, I’m sorry. I just—”

“Hate Halloween,” they said together.

The background noise disappeared, and Layla said, “I’ll meet you out front and we’ll go to the country club. They’re having prime rib tonight.”

“Layla, that’s not—”

“I don’t want you to be miserable. It’s fine.
